| Questor chief scientist Prof Tara Tachel wants her fiman reconneers to explore way back in time, through evolution, challenging mission control for authorisation to divert some of her assets to re-examining causal factors that led to the mysterious mass extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
Tachel believes that if she can discover that a major contributor in Earth’s prehistory was a phenomenon akin to that now menacing the planet, the team could possibly predict how DeepStorm might play out. Yet, despite the prospect that doing so might save millions of lives, it is seen as such a long shot that Questor administration simply won't support it.
In 2066 – Through the sciences of archaeology and palaeontology a lot more has been resolved about mass extinctions – those that stand out for the sheer scale of global loss, upwards of 40% to 50% of all life forms living at the time. Evidence points to the planet somehow having been wracked by massive geological upheavals at those times – with both eruptions of super volcanoes as well as asteroid impacts taking part in a single phenomenon. Equally disquieting is the realisation that those disastrous bouts of activity were, or are, neither accidental nor random. Once again, as in the past, something fundamental is going on. It is as if, somewhere within our Solar System, some as yet unidentified disturbance is at the same time affecting the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates and the movement of NEOs (Near Earth Objects).
